Grant Hagen

September 3, 1925 — April 1, 2009

Grant Gaylen Hagen was born August 3, 1925 in Clinton, MN to Carl and Bertha (Martinson) Hagen. Grant was the youngest of nine children. He attended St. Pauli Church and then transferred to Trinity Lutheran Church where he was confirmed.



Grant attended and graduated from Clinton High School in 1943. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy in July 1943 and was deployed to the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in August 1946. Grant was called up the U.S. Naval Reserve to serve again in November 1950 and honorably discharged in August 1951.



After serving in the Navy, Grant moved to Milbank, SD where he was employed as a mechanic for several years, later moving to California and continuing work as a mechanic. He returned home to Clinton to retire in 1983. He was united in marriage to Karen (Duhr) Schlimme on June 21, 1987 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton.



Grant’s hobby was working on old equipment, motors and engines. He opened his own shop in Clinton where he worked on many people’s small engines and motors. Because of his knowledge and interest in old equipment, he helped form the Big Stone County Olde Power & Machinery Club which set up displays and demonstrations at the Big Stone County fair. Grant was an active member until entering Northridge Residence in Ortonville, MN. in 2008.



Grant passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Northridge Residence.



Survivors include his wife Karen of Clinton; son, Richard Hagen of Spear Fish, S.D. and daughter Loran Leal of Pasadina, TX; step-son Lyle Schlimme of Clinton, MN and step-daughter, Jodi (Brian) Behrens of Park Rapids, MN; sisters, June Harvey of Northridge Residence , Ortonville, MN and Ardyce (Bill) Stevens, Mt. Airy, MD; sisters-in-law Neva and Phyllis; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.



He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Arlen, Vernon, Benneth, Randolph and Harris Hagen and sister Eileen.
