George Ammerman

February 4, 1921 — March 18, 2005

George N. Ammerman was born February 4, 1921 and baptized at the Bunde Christian Reformed Church in Clara City. He attended district 55 country school 1st-8th grade and completed high school in Clara City. After graduation he began working at Engers Plumbing and Heating.

In 1942 he joined the air force and took flight training school at Williams Field in Chandler Arizona. While there he trained to be a pilot for the P38. As a lieutenant in World War II he flew missions from England to Germany. After returning to the states he trained pilots in California and met Mary Howard. George and Mary Howard were united in marriage June 18, 1945 in Seattle, Washington.

After completing his military service George and Mary Howard moved to Graceville to raise their three children. George established Ammerman Plumbing and Heating. Following the birth of two more children the family enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and family picnics. Howard and George suffered the loss of three children due to a fire in December of 1956. After rebuilding their lives and home their youngest son was born.

George and Howard were members of Mount Olive Lutheran Church. They enjoyed entertaining, were active golfers, and outdoor enthusiasts. George was President of the golf course in Graceville. He was also a member of the American Legion in town and of the P38 and P52 association for pilots. He enjoyed snowmobiling with his friends and could be found many Friday nights bowling at Don's Alleys. In December of 1990 his wife Howard passed away.

George retired from plumbing and heating and began working at the Graceville Golf Course as grounds supervisor. He kept active with hunting, fishing, and golfing until his health prevented it. George passed away March 18, 2005 at the Grace Home in Graceville.

He is survived by two daughters, Trudy (David) Shepard of Waterloo, IA; Linda Diekmann of Blooming Prairie, MN; and one son David (Deb) Ammerman of Graceville, MN; two brothers, Jim Ammerman of Clara City, MN, and Harold Ammerman of Willmar, MN; step brother, Lampert (Lois) Klein of Clara City, MN; and two step sisters, Doris (Francis) Holverson of Murdock, MN; and Arlene (Elmer) Hanson of Reno, Nevada. He has eight grandchildren, Robin, Tammy, Duayne, Donna, Brent, Darren, Alexis, and Brooke. He is also survived by twenty great grandchildren. His is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Howard Ammerman; children, Joyce, Dale, and Wayne Ammerman, and a granddaughter Leigh Diekmann.
