Evelyn Marihart

January 26, 1919 — August 11, 2005

Evelyn Rose Rausch was born on January 26, 1919, at her family's farm home in Belgrade, Stearns County, Minnesota, to parents Mathias and Anna. Evelyn and her family moved to Plummer, MN. Over the years they lived on three different farms near Plummer. When Evelyn was 11, she lived with her family five miles from Plummer. While living there she went to rural school, walking 1-1/2 miles to school. This was also the time during the "Great Depression" and the "Dirty Thirties". During the Great Depression and Dirty Thirties Evelyn found work doing housework for neighbors or anyone who needed a helper with washing walls, ceilings, curtains, and other household duties. She earned $2.50-$3.00 a week. In between jobs she would help her mother at home. After a year of working near home, Evelyn stepped up in the world doing housework in Thief River Falls making $5.00 a week.

Evelyn graduated from the eighth grade. After earning her tuition, Evelyn attended the Northwest School of Agriculture at Crookston, MN, for two years. After attending school in Crookston, Evelyn had an opportunity to do housework for $8.00 a week in Minneapolis, MN. She did housework for a couple years until WWII and jobs opened in the defense plants. So, Evelyn went to work as an inspector of 30 and 50 caliber shells at "Twin Cities Ordnance" by New Brighton, MN.

Evelyn became tired of the city life and moved to Wheaton, MN, working as a housekeeper. She later found a job at Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville, MN, as a nurses' aid. One evening Evelyn's brother, Herman, asked if she wanted to attend a barn dance, which she went to and met John Marihart.

John and Evelyn Marihart were united in marriage on October 4, 1947, at St. Patrick's Church in Collis, MN. Together they lived on the old Marihart farm by Graceville, but in 1949 they bought their own land west of Collis. John and Evelyn had 6 children; Ann, Carolyn, David, Dale, Stephen, and Roy. On January 16, 1985, John died of cancer at the age of 71 years.

Evelyn Rose (Rausch) Marihart passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2005, at Grace Home in Graceville, MN, reaching the age of 86 years.

Evelyn took great pride in keeping a neat home, although her favorite past-time was not housework. She claimed it was better after she had her own home. Her favorite outdoor pastime was gardening, not vegetables, but flowers. She also loved to read.
