Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene S. Lambrechts, age 72, of Twin Brooks, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2006, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will be the celebrant. Gene died from an aggressive liver cancer on Monday, August 28, 2006, surrounded by his family, at Avera-McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls. Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:00 a.m. Saturday to attend the mass. The organist will be Sandy Tucholke and Larry Tietjen will be the soloist. The St. Lawrence Funeral Choir will present special music. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 4-7 p.m., followed by a Scripture service and rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church Saturday one hour before the mass. Honorary pallbearers will be the past and present employees of the Milbank State Highway Department of Transportation and the morning Millstone coffee buddies and the afternoon tea buddies from Hardees. Active pallbearers will be Brian Lambrechts, Ronald Borns, Dennis Michlitsch, and Arlin, Bill, Danny, and Rick Bohn. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery with graveside military rites presented by the Birch-Miller American Legion Post No. 9 and the Grant County VFW Post #3486 of Milbank.
Gene was born on September 22, 1933, at Twin Brooks, SD, the son of Harold and Josephine (Westphal) Lambrechts. He attended the first and second grade at a country school west of Twin Brooks. Gene then completed elementary school through the eighth grade in Twin Brooks. He completed his GED in the Navy. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served his country during the Korean Conflict from December 19, 1950, until his honorable discharge on July 16, 1954.
Gene was united in marriage to Mary Lou Sullivan on December 18, 1954, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. They lived all of their married life in the Twin Brooks area. Gene worked for the State Highway Department of Transportation for thirty-nine years. At the time of his retirement he was a foreman.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Gene lived for his wife, his children, and grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and trap.
Survivors include his wife Mary Lou, Twin Brooks; his eight children, Michael and wife Angela, Milbank; Karla Jensen and husband Mark, and Nancy Borns and husband Dan, all of Twin Brooks; Steve, Watertown, SD; Linda Brandt and husband Michael, Revillo, SD; Lori Porath and husband Perry, Twin Brooks; Darcy Reed and husband Terry, South Shore, SD; and Harold Lambrechts, Watertown, SD; sixteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Duane Lambrechts and wife Arlys, Milbank; two sisters, Rosezella Hogan and husband Darwin, Florence, SD, and Donna Hawkinson and husband Bernard, Bellflower, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Annabelle Meaney.
