Funeral services for Mrs. Esther McGhinnis, age 80, of rural Corona, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2005, at the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. The Reverend N. Craig Werling and the Reverend Janine Rew-Werling will officiate. Esther died on Saturday, October 22, 2005, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:00 a.m. Saturday to attend services. The organist will be Carol Ydstie and the soloist will be Ray Ogdahl. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Friday from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Saturday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be her three sons and three grandchildren. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be directed to the American Lutheran Church, 401 S. Flynn Drive, Milbank, SD 57252. Esther was born on March 17, 1925, in Wagner, SD, the daughter of Jens Christian and Frandadaine Maria (Frandsen) Sahl. She graduated from Wagner High School. Esther was united in marriage to Charles W. "Chuck" McGhinnis on Jan. 1, 1947, in Wagner, SD. Following marriage the couple lived in Washington, D.C. where Esther worked as a secretary. They returned to Wagner and lived there for six years. They lived in Belleville, MI, for thirteen years where Esther worked as a secretary in a hospital. In 1962 they moved to Highmore, SD, where she worked as a secretary for the Sully Buttes Telephone Company. They moved to Marshall, MN, in 1968 where Esther worked as a secretary for the Great Plains Natural Gas Company. In 1971 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD. The couple moved to a home on Big Stone Lake in July 1973, where she worked as a secretary for the Bechtel Electric Company while the Big Stone Power Plant was being built. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. Esther loved her family and friends dearly. She enjoyed gardening. Survivors include her husband, Charles W. "Chuck" McGhinnis, rural Corona, SD; three sons, Chuck McGhinnis, Jr., and wife Linda, Wake, VA; Larry McGhinnis and wife LaVon, Carol Stream, Ill.; and Ken McGhinnis and wife Bobbe Jo, Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren: David McGhinnis and wife, Kelli, Gloucester, VA; and Dan McGhinnis and Dianna McGhinnis, both of Carol Stream, Ill.; one sister, Ellen Anderson, Rapid City, SD; and several nieces and nephews. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Linda Marie McGhinnis (1961); two sisters, Lilly Hague and Christine Miller; one half-sister, Donna DeVries; and two half-brothers, Dick and Robert Burian. The Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank is in charge of the arrangements.
