Delford VonEschen

April 20, 1921 — August 23, 2009

Delford George Von Eschen was born April 20, 1921 to Emory & Edna (Hamm) Von Eschen at their home in Ortonville, MN. After graduating from Odessa High School in 1939, he served in the US Army during WWII from 1942 to 1945, during which time he trained at Camp Hale in Colorado and attained the rank of corporal. He served as a gunner in both the Pacific and European theaters.

After returning home in 1945, he met and married Muriel Giese from the Appleton area. They met during Sunday evenings spent roller skating at the Sioux Historic Roller Rink. They were married in 1950 at the home of Muriel’s parents. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Connie and Carol.

Del and Muriel farmed northeast of Ortonville for more than 30 years. After retiring in 1983, they built a home on the golf course in Ortonville; and, never one to simply sit, Del became a golf enthusiast. Del and Muriel also enjoyed traveling together and toured much of the United States in their RV trailer. Del was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church (now Tabor United Methodist Church) in Big Stone City, S.D. for over 60 years.

Del left this world on August 23, 2009, at the age of 88.

Del is survived by his wife of 59 years, Muriel; two daughters, Connie (David) Kraus of Chaska, MN and Carol (Mark) Mogan of Cadillac, MI.; grandchildren, Michelle (Joe Birr) Kraus of Victoria, MN, Catherine (Aaron) Kirscht of Seattle, WA, Robert (Annelies) Bartels, Mt. Buller, VIC, AU, Stephen (Crystal) Kraus of Chaska, MN, Cristin (Mark) Wantland, Atlanta, GA, Jennifer Mogan, Denver, CO, Maria Kraus, Chaska, MN, Meghan Mogan, Cadillac, MI, and David John Kraus, Chaska, MN. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; one sister Floriene Bemmels Miklos, Fairfax, MN, one brother Donald Von Eschen, Clear Lake, SD, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Suzanne Kraus; brother, Lowell Hamm; and sister, Joyce Koch.

The family prefers memorials to the Big Stone Health Care Foundation.
