David Hasslen

March 11, 1939 — January 9, 2005

David Hasslen, 65, Ortonville, died peacefully, Sunday, January9, 2005, in his home at Ortonville, following a courageous battle with cancer.



David Allen Hasslen was born on March 11, 1939 in Ortonville, MN to Robert J. and Helen (Holmberg) Hasslen. He was baptized and confirmed at First English Lutheran Church of Ortonville. He attended Ortonville schools and graduated from OHS in 1957. Following high school, he attended Gustavus Adolphus College and graduated from South Dakota State University in 1962. While in college, Dave was one of the top collegiate golfers in the nation and achieved All-American status.



On September 8, 1962, Dave was united in marriage to Joan Sanderson in Brookings, SD. Dave was the long-time manager of the family owned 7-UP Bottling Company in Ortonville, along with many other business ventures throughout the area. He was involved in many Ortonville civic and government offices, including City Council member. Upon his death, Dave was a member of Abiding Faith Free Lutheran Church in Ortonville.



Golf was Dave's passion in life, both playing and teaching many golfers throughout the area. He currently holds or has held golf course records at many golf courses in the tri-state area, including a 29 on the old Ortonville 9-Hole course and a 61 on the current Ortonville 18-hole golf course. In addition, Dave won numerous golf tournaments statewide, including multiple Ortonville City Tournaments. His other passion was cooking. Dave was a phenomenal cook and will be remembered for his famous Honky's pizza. The real joy of his life was his three sons. He was a dog lover and also enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and all sports.



Survivors include his wife, Joan of Ortonville; three sons, Bill (Amy) Hasslen of Pittsburgh, PA, Jim (Kathy) of Ortonville, MN, Rich (Jenn) of North Yorkshire, England; one brother, Robert (JoAnn) of Big Stone City, SD; one aunt, Hazel Ballagh of Burnsville, MN; sisters-in-law Carol (Jerry) Smith of Rochester, MN, and Marilyn (Dale) Hagen of Alcestor, SD; six grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob, Rachelle, Josh, Elijah and Olivia, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.



Dave was preceded in death by his parents.



The entire Hasslen family would like to thank all of Dave's friends for their kind words, phone calls, cards, food and visits with Dave during these trying times. In addition, we would like to thank Dr. Bob Ross and the OAHS staff for their excellent care; Dr. Preston Steen; the Rice Hospice team, Cindy, Peggy and Pete, for their support and kind, thoughtful ways; Gloria, Myra and the OAHS Home Health team for their understanding, patience and support; Dave's close friends, Ron Belling, Gordon Hippen, and Lance Starbuck; the entire team at Ortonville Ambulance Services for their quick response and outstanding service; the creative genius of Mervyn Pomeranke and his Banjo All-Stars; Steve and Chris at Larson Funeral Home for their compassion and guidance during this difficult time; Ron and Toni Frauenshuh; the First English Lutheran Church congregation and Day of Love; the Abiding Faith Free Lutheran Church congregation, and especially Pastors David Hinrichs and Tom Kyle for their spiritual guidance, compassion, friendship and fellowship with both Dave and the entire family along with their complete commitment to Jesus Christ!
