Clare Duffield

June 17, 1916 — November 22, 2006

Clare Hatchitt Duffield was born on June 17, 1916 on his family's farm in Folsom Township, MN, to Arthur and Nina (Hatchitt) Duffield. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church in Browns Valley. Clare graduated from the Browns Valley High School in 1931 at the age of fifteen.

Following high school, Clare hopped the freight to Everett, WA where he worked in a logging camp and had a milk route. After returning to Minnesota, he owned a truck, transporting livestock to South St. Paul. Later, Clare met Verna Rogness at the Clover Leaf CafAAC. in Browns Valley and they subsequently began seeing each other. Clare and Verna were united in marriage on October 10, 1943 in Minneapolis, MN. To this union were born three children: Barbara, Connie and David. He dearly loved his children and allowed them their independence but always was there for them when he was needed. Clare and Verna spent sixty-three loving years together before his passing.

Clare was always ready to proudly tell people that he was from Browns Valley, MN, quickly following that up with a brief description of its location. He lived in the area nearly his entire life, working the land as a farmer. Even though he had worked the land his entire life, he never got set in his ways and was always ready to try something new in farming. Clare proudly served on the Traverse County ASCS Board and the Farm Home Administration during the 1970's. Clare was well known for his love of horses, and for his giving soul by allowing any of the children in the area to ride his ponies whenever they wanted. He was also a member of the Hills and Valley Riding Club.

Clare was a lifetime member of the Methodist-Presbyterian Church, as well as a very active member of the Kodayha Masonic Lodge #153 for many years before its disbandment. He loved spending time with people and was extremely outgoing. His other passion, which started when he was a very young boy, was for music. Clare loved to not only listen to music but also sing. His family was very musical and often spent time singing together. Some of his favorite songs were ones written by his mother about him and his brothers. Clare's voice and love will truly be missed by all who were touched by his wonderful spirit.

Clare passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at the Browns Valley Health Center in Browns Valley, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Nina Duffield; step-mother, Viola Duffield; brothers, Ward, Lee and Stan; sisters-in-law, Nita, Gertrude and Diane; mother-in-law, Anna Rogness; brothers-in-law, Fred Frey, Wilfred and Elmer Rogness; sisters-in-law, Elsie Frey and Mabel Rogness.
