Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Schuchard, age 101, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2008, at the First Congregational Church in Milbank. The Reverend Colleen Natalie-Lees will officiate. Bessie died on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the Golden Living Center in Milbank. Family members are asked to meet in the church basement by 10:00 a.m. Monday to attend services. The organist will be Carol Ydstie and special music will be provided by a duet sung by Gary and Lois Brehmer and a solo by Dale Bothun. Visitation will at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. and in the church one hour before services. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Bradley Nelson, Dale Bothun, Rick Estenson, Terry Patnoe, Carlyle Brehmer, Donald Brehmer, Jeff Schuchard, and Wayne Brehmer. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Big Stone City, SD.
Bessie was born on June 8, 1906, in Nassau, MN, the daughter of Egeberg and Marriah Isabel (Macy) Hall. Due to her father's health, at the age of four she moved with her family to Meade County, South Dakota, where they homesteaded. She attended school through the eighth grade. Bessie was united in marriage to Henry Schuchard on February 14, 1924, in Milbank. Following marriage they lived southeast of Milbank for eight years; on the edge of Big Stone City, SD, for thirteen years; east of Milbank at the stone quarries for five years; west of Twin Brooks, SD, for eleven years; Stockholm, SD, for four years; Hugo, MN, for three years; southwest of Milbank for seventeen years; and Bessie had lived in Milbank for the last twenty years. She had lived at the Golden Living Center since August 25, 1998.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Milbank. She was a very faithful person who put her trust in God. Bessie loved to sing hymns throughout the day. She was an excellent cook. She loved to dance, play cards, and garden. Bessie was a very hospitable and generous lady who loved having family over to her home for Sunday potluck dinners. She was a very patient person who never raised her voice and taught her children to be respectful of others.
Bessie is survived by eight daughters, Kathryn Maple and husband Lloyd, Ozark, ARK; Helen Nelson and husband Jim, and Dorothy Brehmer, all of Madison, MN; Lucille McGuire and husband Jack, Kingman, AZ; Rose Estenson, Joplin, MO; Celia Bothun and husband Kenneth, Columbia Heights, MN; Carol Oltman and husband Marlow, Milbank; and Darlene Nelson and husband Stanley, Cottage Grove, MN; two daughters-in-law, Betty Schuchard, Centuria, WI; and Elaine Schuchard, Great Falls, MT; forty-two grandchildren; ninety-four great grandchildren; and twenty-eight great, great grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Peschong, Minneapolis, MN; Evelyn Wellnitz, Milbank; and Lois Werner, Ortonville, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband who died on April 26, 1988, five sons, Larry, Donald, Luverne, Benjamin, and Robert Schuchard; one granddaughter, Sandra Brehmer; one grandson, Allen Brehmer, two brothers, Donald and Edgar Hall; and four sisters, Beatrice Koehntopp, Marvel Forbes, Eunice Brotzel, and Macy Dornbusch, preceded her in death.
