Bernice Sanasack

September 16, 1920 — March 20, 2010

Bernice “Peg” Lylah Kolling was born on September 16, 1920 to Rasmus Christian “Chris” and Olga (Wade) Kolling at their home in Chokio, MN. Peg was baptized and confirmed at Chokio Lutheran Church in Chokio. She attended school in Chokio, graduating as the Senior Class President and Salutatorian in 1938.

On June 7th 1941, Peg was united in marriage to Robert Sanasack in a triple wedding ceremony, along with two of Robert’s brothers, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville, MN. To this union, Bob and Peg were blessed with four children: James, David, Donna and Kathy.

From 1941 until 1967, Bob and Peg farmed just outside of Graceville where they raised their children. In 1967, they moved into Graceville. At this time, Peg began working as a cook at the parochial school and then Graceville Public Schools. After cooking for 20 years, Peg began working as a Nursing Assistant, working at both the old and new Grace Homes in Graceville.

Peg was a long time member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary; she was involved in different circles at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and organized and worked at the Thrift Store at the Holy Trinity Hospital.

Peg was very fond of traditions, especially her Norwegian heritage, making lutefisk and lefsa. She lived a very active life, playing cards, gardening – vegetables and flowers, cooking and canning. She also raised chickens and sold the eggs.

Peg loved to read and after the loss of her eye sight, she adapted to books on tape. Her mind never quit and she was always listening to a book. She was very into sports, unlike her husband, never missing a Vikings or Twins game as well as the local town teams.

In March of 2006, Bob and Peg were the first people to move into the Grace Village. They resided there until just this last September when they made the move into Grace Home.

Peg died on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Grace Home in Graceville with her family by her side. She had lived to reach the age of 89.

Peg is survived by her husband of 68 years, Robert Sanasack of Graceville, MN; children David Sanasack of Alexandria, VA, Donna (Donald) Robinson of Spotsylvania, VA, Kathy (Lonny) Eggiman of Moorhead, MN; daughter-in-law Edith Sanasack of Inver Grove Heights, MN; 7 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and sister Juanita (James) Graham of Boise, ID.

She is preceded in death by her son, James; parents Chris and Olga; and one brother Clayton Kolling.
