Bernard Smith

June 23, 1910 — December 29, 2006

Bernard W. Smith was born June 23, 1910 in Clinton Falls Township, Steele County, MN to Vincent and Ida (Heiker) Smith. He attended the area schools, graduating from Owatonna High School in 1929. He moved to Ortonville in 1931 and worked at the Electric Maid Bakery for his brother, Cliff Smith. Bernard later worked for the HV Hansen Grain Elevator as an elevator manager in Ortonville for twenty-six years.



On October 15, 1934 he married Christine Korstjens at St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City, SD. To this union were born five children; Genevieve, Vincent, Joyce, Robert, and Helen. Bernard and Christine celebrated sixty-two wonderful years together prior to her passing on December 4, 1996 in Ortonville. Bernard has lived at Northridge for the past seven years.



He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church participating in many parish activities. He was also a member of the Gene Rausch Council #7187 of the Knights of Columbus in Ortonville and past Grand Knight of the Fr. George Campbell Council #1391 Knights of Columbus in Graceville, MN. He enjoyed watching sports. Bernard was an avid reader and enjoyed genealogy, compiling an extensive Smith family history.



Bernard passed away Friday December 29, 2006 at Northridge Residence in Ortonville, MN. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, five brothers; Clifford Smith, Father George Smith, Alfred Smith, Leo Smith, and Aloysius Smith, and one sister, Rose Wasek..



He is survived by his sons; Vincent (Anita) Smith of Summerfield, FL and Robert Smith of Brooklyn Center, MN, his daughters; Genevieve (James) Grosz of Breckenridge, MN, Joyce Anzevino of St Paul, MN, and Helen (James) Thompson of Plymouth, MN. He is also survived by two sisters; Magdalen (Michael) Haley of Waterville, MN and Cecelia (Robert) Crowley of La Grange, IL, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
