Alvina Almquist

July 12, 1911 — June 27, 2007

Alvina Mary (Appel) Almquist was born on July 12, 1911, in Roberts County, SD, to parents, Louis and Mary (Hedrick) Appel. Alvina was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith in the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Browns Valley, MN. She attended country school and graduated from Browns Valley High School in 1931. Being one of eight children, Alvina had a strong love for family and following her graduation she remained home helping to take care of the family following an accident her father had with a bull.

Alvina met Raymond "Turk" Almquist at a dance in Peever, SD. Five years following their first dance, Alvina and Turk married on April 28, 1942. They made their home on a farm by Big Stone Lake near Columbia Beach. Together they worked to raise pigs, cattle, and milked cows. Following a move to a farm near Browns Valley, MN, Alvina and Turk were blessed with the birth of three children, John, Shirley, and Linda.

Alvina was a very determined and hard working woman. Not only did she help on the farm, milking and gathering eggs, she also worked at Ike's Chicken Shack for 30 years. Following her and Turk's retirement from farming, the couple made time for their favorite past time, dancing. Alvina also enjoyed baking and cooking. She was an avid Twins and Vikings fan and liked to cheer on her favorite teams. Alvina cherished time spent with family and friends especially visiting over a card game.

Alvina was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Daughters of Isabella, and the Golden Gals Bridge Club. She loved her independence and continued to live in her own home until her passing. Alvina would have been 96 years old on July 12 of this year. She will be truly missed by those that loved her and called her friend.

Alvina passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at the Coteau Des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, SD, reaching the age of 95 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Mary; husband Raymond "Turk" Almquist; five brothers, Albert, George, Leo, Clarence, and Lester; and two sisters, Gertrude Ebben and Irene Lamers.

Alvina is survived by her children, John (Corinne) Almquist of Watertown, SD; Shirley (Bruce) Lagermaier of Richfield, MN; and Linda (Thomas) Weinzettel of Eagan, MN; one sister-in-law Helen Appl of Milbank, SD; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends
